The EHWG Leadership Initiative was established to first honor four men who were giants in the life of the founder of the Leadership Initiative. Carl West was extremely fortunate to have these men pour into his knowledge, courage, wisdom, compassion, and the understanding of what it takes to be a true leader and what's expected of you once you acquire leadership.
Stand up For Change: Mr. Henry English was the founder of the Black United Fund of Illinois (BUFI), the community-based organization where (I) currently serve as Chairman of the Board. Thanks to Henry and his vision to see (me) in this role long before the position was offered to (me). Mr. English was a visionary and someone who always understood that change is inevitable. Therefore, be prepared to adjust and overcome challenges while planning for the future.
Tell Your Own Narrative: William Garth was like a college professor who held court each time I visited his office. When I went to hang with him, I knew I had to set aside at least two hours. He would not let me leave even if I had not heard multiple stories about select people, places, and things. I can truly state that I have two Ph.D.'s from Mr. Garth University. He was super smart and very wise. He showed me where the minefield is buried and how to avoid them during my journey. He mainly expressed to me that I must control my own narrative, which should be easy since I owned a media platform.
Build Meaningful Relationships: Dr. Conrad Worrill was a scholar, intellectual, and street thug. He could move around in many circles and people who knew him, totally respected him, from all walks of life. I can't tell you how many people he introduced me to who proved to be valuable in my life, today, and especially since his passing. He was instrumental in ensuring that I became the Chairman of the Black United Fund of Illinois. And after I was elected with his guidance, he literally predicted everything that was going to happen and who was going to come out of the closet to claim their place within BUFI. He was accurate!
Live Like a FREE Man: A man that was so truly loved, Mr. Greg Hinton, always expressed to me, 'Speak your voice. Live like a FREE man. Never let anyone silence you!' That's why he supported me, he wanted to ensure that my voice was heard. Greg was a high-level corporate ACTIVIST/REBEL! He fought without shame and hesitation for Black folks. Mr. Hinton said to me on numerous occasions, always fight for your people! Never be afraid to show that you're FREE. That's the real memory of Greg Hinton, a FREE man!
The EHWG Leadership Initiative and its loyal and trusted mentors will ensure that each young man that comes through the nine-month-long initiative will be in a position to take control of their lives and become effective leaders within the families, professionally, and in the communities where they live, work and play. The EHWG Leadership Initiative's primary objective is to each year, disburse into society, 15 young men who will be equipped to change the world!
TRUTH 4 Literacy is a not-for-profit after-school program that consists of monthly visits to select adopted schools, chosen by founder and executive director, Carl West, who uses his leverage and network to bring successful personalities in a variety of arenas to discuss LEADERSHIP & CRITICAL THINKING Skills. “We believe that these two very important components have the ultimate influence on not only youth but most people’s behavior. Being a smart and thought-provoking LEADER will help in the most critical times in your life when you have to decide which direction to take to insure your greatest positive outcome. And those decisions are made with careful and precise CRITICAL analysis,” stated Carl.
There are two Chicago schools that benefit directly from TRUTH 4 Literacy, the parent fiscal agent to EHWG Leadership Initiative. These two schools have very significant meaning to the founder, who attended both schools which contributed greatly to his professional and personal accomplishments:
1). Burnside Scholastic Academy will receive two scholarships each year, which are given to two 7th grade students who have the most improvement in their grades from the 7th to the 8th grade.
2). CVCA (Chicago Vocational Career Academy) receives two scholarships each year, which will be awarded to two seniors who have demonstrated the most improvement. The two awards are named the Emmitt Vaughn Scholarship for Leaders and TBTNews Media Scholarship.
The first initiative of The TiTaNs is to address and report the unheralded and the often-ignored impact and advancement/progress of economic development in Black communities when resources and strategic planning are administered properly. One such TiTan was Exelon's Emmett Vaughn, who was VP of Diversity and who single-handily delivered over $1 billion to minority and diverse businesses and organizations throughout his tenure at Exelon. Mr. Vaughn, also a mentor to LI founder was respected globally for his work.
For 9 months (March - October) on every Tuesday & Thursday, 15 at-risk young men (ages 14 - 18) from partnered social service agencies and high schools, who've been professionally selected by the LI's leadership team will assemble at the leadership location (Henry English Entrepreneur & Business Center) in South Shore, where multiple corporate, civil, and community leaders will highlight engage as mentors to street the importance of effective individual and team leadership.
The Leadership team of (mentors) will give real-life experiences and antidotes about effective leadership and how leaders are developed and how they perform to not only transform their own lives but the lives of others. This is to build Individual Leadership skills. These chosen mentors will each commit to three consecutive months to ensure the youth have familiar faces and voices. There will be three male mentors per quarter. (We may insert a female mentor during the session).
The Team Leadership experience will be executed by taking the 15 young men on real-life trips to corporations, and other team-related activities like sporting events as well as participating in sporting activities like basketball, softball, and football drills or experiments. Former or current professional and college athletes will instruct these young men in discussions about teamwork, commitment to others, and sacrifices for the greater good of the team. The initiative will take place each Saturday at the Southside YMCA, where Carl is a long-standing board member. The 15 young men will be put into (3) groups of (5) to play actual tournament in the sports activities listed.
Black youth are especially vulnerable to mental health conditions. To address this reality, our Young Leaders will participate in bi-monthly Empowerment Group facilitated by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker to promote their positive mental health.
NOTE: The months of November and December will be considered the offseason. January and February will be the recruitment season for the upcoming program (March - October). Young men will be fed nutritious meals during their time on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as, on Saturdays.
The major platform that EHWG Leadership Initiative will focus on is pushing for more Black males within public and private schools as well as charter schools. It's imperative that young Black boys see powerful Black male figure assisting and guiding them through both the educational process and as mentors--leading them through life's important and oftentimes challenging but yet rewarding journies.
This is a very interesting time in Chicago and globally, as older leaders are either stepping aside or being pushed aside, and emerging new leaders in various fields are preparing to take the lead and build better communities. LI thinks it is absolutely imperative that we now, identify new leaders and work closely with them to build capacity. The Next Generation Leadership Council (NGLC) work behind the scenes on how to position NGLC to be that power group consisting of thousands of emerging leaders within the next generation.
Mr. James Lowery is a globally recognized leader on diversity and inclusion within corporations world-wide. His work on helping Fortune 500 companies locate and acquire qualified Blacks to sit on Corporate Boards has been featured in major business periodicals and cable news programs. His latest book, Change Agents has been one of Amazon's most ordered reads.
The good work of EHWG Leadership Initiative strives to amplify positive narratives of young Black men in Chicago and their stories of personal development, mentorship, and success. By penetrating social and mainstream media, LI will have the opportunities to tell its own stories of success and accomplishments. Follow us in the media with digital platforms like TBTNews and WVON!

As the world continues to deal with this COVID mess, it's important to also attempt to keep inspiring our youth. They're also feeling the effects of the pandemic and its destructive impact on our economy, emotions, families, and mental capacity to stay focused. It's extremely crucial to establish relationships with our youth and to keep them motivated about their lives, careers, and futures.
Seeing the spark in the eyes of young people can ultimately ignite their passion for progress. LI feels obligated to assist them in finding that hunger to learn, to become, and live dreams that will give them purpose. It can mean so much to one's self-esteem and confidence to explore and find their identity. LI will continue inspiring young people to ask themselves, Why Not Me?
Your support and contributions enable us to do the work that we do to achieve our mission. Thank you for making a difference!
